ERIC RICHMOND has been a fan of Brooklyn history since he first appeared on 3rd Place in Carroll Gardens in 1988.
The more he looked, the more he learned and the more he respected the talents, drive and vision of those that built a city
into a national powerhouse of business, art, sports, culture and industry.
The Brooklyn Lyceum (a.k.a. Public Bath #7) is his contribution to polishing up that historical luster.
The Only the Dead plays series is a testament to the history of Brooklyn.
Buried and mostly forgotten in spectacular Green-Wood Cemetery are tales and inspiration to match the ages.
The things those buried there have done are a matchless, priceless treasure.
They will be heard.
MISSION STATEMENT
In the late 19th Century Brooklyn was one of the most culturally influential cities in the world.
Now, in the 21st Century, a revitalization and rediscovery of the borough is in full gear.
The Brooklyn Lyceum strives to challenge the intellect and the imagination of the New York theater audience while also restoring an artistic vigor to a giant waking from a long, deep slumber. In a forgotten borough, in a long forgotten building, by a longer forgotten architect, in what was once Public Bath #7, the Brooklyn Lyceum serves as a crucible for striking, articulate culture.
ABOUT THE BROOKLYN LYCEUM
The Lyceum has presented weekly comedy troupe Frogmen of the Gowanus, the one-man shows In the Shadow of the Third Rail and Curses, The Happy Happy Smile Hour and a Half Variety Show and SwampKing, our monthly ten minute play tournament, which presents the work of playwrights from all five boroughs to standing-room-only crowds in our intimate 60 seat Geloscopic Theatre. The Downstairs theater, an immense 4000 square foot performance area, has played host to Salome, CirqueBoom’s The Circus of Vices and Virtues, Anthony Schwartzman’s Hunger Dreams, Richard II and Antony & Cleopatra. Musically the Lyceum has enjoyed Cyro Baptista’s Brazilian percussion troupe Beat the Donkey, Duck Baker, Marc Ribot, the Polyphonic Spree, Black Dice and Mum as well as the up-and-coming singer-songwriters Nadine Goellner, Natalia Zukerman and Kelly Zullo.
THE BROOKLYN LYCEUM-GREEN-WOOD CEMETERY CONNECTION
The Brooklyn Lyceum has developed a partnership with one of America’s leading cultural and historic institutions, Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. This partnership brings music and theatrical performances into Green-Wood’s 1911 Chapel. The Only the Dead play series, developed by the Brooklyn Lyceum, dramatizes the stories of persons buried in Brooklyn's historic Green-Wood Cemetery. Green-Wood Cemetery’s chapel will soon be the site of a SwampKing evening where the ten-minute plays will be based on the 600,000 residents of Brooklyn’s most beautiful neighborhood.
Part of the proceeds of both the events in Green-Wood and the Only the Dead series help fund Saved in Time, Green-Wood’s Monument restoration trust.
The Brooklyn Lyceum is currently evaluating several other partnership opportunities designed to get the Brooklyn word out.
Future Only The Dead plays produced by The Brooklyn Lyceum in association with The Green-Wood Cemetery will include:
